VLC 3.0.12 is here, with lots of goodies, including native support for Apple Silicon (M1 processor) Macs. This week, VideoLAN announced a new VLC video player update that will make M1 Mac owners very happy. If you recently bought an Apple silicon MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or Mac mini VLC version 3.0.12 brings the app in line with Big Sur visuals. VLC is a powerful all-in-one, open-source, cross-platform media player. It supports most audio/video formats, DVDs and CDs, and various streaming protocols.

Note that after updating to v3.0.12 you will still have the x86 app. You need to hit Check for updates from the menu again, then you’ll be shown v3.0.12.1, which is the actual ARM version of the app.

Even if you have an Intel-powered Mac, you should download this update as it fixes the audio distortion issues that happened on macOS. It has some UI improvements for Big Sur as well.

VLC, the popular open-source media player is available on almost all platforms, and given the recent changes in the Mac lineup with the M1 silicon, the player just got updated with full support. Conversely - I’m curious if anyone who’s bought any of the 3 M1 Macs has had any issues using VLC through Rosetta 2. The sound mutes for 1 second in every 3 seconds' playback for some videos. Macs aside, the latest VLC adds support for the RIST protocol, improves how settings for adaptive streaming resolution are handled, updates the YouTube and Vocaroo scripts, touches up the web interface and patches several security issues.
