If we had a penny for every time we thanked WhatsApp for releasing its “Delete for everyone” feature, we’d be plenty rich. In case you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what the feature is all about, it basically allows you to instantly delete any messages (media or text) that you might have accidentally sent to the wrong person or the ones that you regret sending, without allowing people to read it.
However, according to an application security consultant, Shitesh Sachan, media files sent to iPhone users in group chats (who have ‘Save to Camera Roll’ setting enabled) will remain on the device despite them deleting the media message on WhatsApp. But, these deleted media files won’t be visible on WhatsApp chat window, as reported by the Hacker News.
This is quite different than Android devices, where the media text on WhatsApp and the user picture gallery both gets removed. Sachan reached out to WhatsApp regarding the bug where the spokesperson said that WhatsApp holds no guarantee of deleting such files from the storage of the devices and that doing so is out of the capacity of the “delete for everyone” feature. Now, although users who don’t have the automatic “save to camera roll” option won’t be to have access to such deleted media files, there are many who aren’t aware that they can also disable this option.
WhatsApp told Hacker News that it intends to change the functionality and implementation of this feature in the future. “This feature is working properly, and using the 'delete for everyone' feature in time will result in media being removed from the WhatsApp chat thread. We provide simple options to help iPhone users manage the media they receive from friends and family, per the best practices established by operating systems. If a user chooses to save images to their camera roll they are stored out of reach of WhatsApp's 'delete for everyone feature,” WhatsApp spokesperson told the Hacker News.
